Alex Hooks 100 Year Award

Alex
Julius has been awarded a Centenary Medal. The Medal commemorates the
centenary of federation and honours the contribution made to Australian
society by its citizens. Alex arrived in the Territory in 1978. For six years spanning two terms in the '80s and '90s, he was President of the Amateur Fishermen's Association NT (AFANT) and is now a Life Member. Through his national and Territory magazine and newspaper fishing writings, his Fishing North Australia television and videos series, his time with AFANT, and his advisory capacity on various Departmental and Ministerial fisheries committees, Alex is widely regarded as the principal proponent behind the successful push to drastically reduce the number of commercial barramundi fishing licences and the closure to commercial barra fishing of several major Northern Territory rivers. For more than two decades, and through a variety of mediums, he has been instrumental in getting the Northern Territory recognised as one of Australia's must-visit premier fishing destinations. Alex said the medal was a recognition of the importance of recreational fishing in the NT, and the hard work by many dedicated anglers. "There are a lot of people who have done a lot of work over the years," he said. " I just happened to be team leader for a long time." "At the end of the day, what I like about it is that recreational fishing has been recognised with an award like this." E-mail:alex@hotspot.com.au Alex
and his wife, Christine, celebrate the award in Darwin.
